A powerful CEO puts her career and family at risk when she begins a passionate affair with her much younger intern. Seen in Graham Norton in Guests: Nicole Kidman/Cynthia Erivo/James Norton/Chris McClausland/Benson Boone (2024).
The film attempts to tell the story from a woman’s perspective, prioritizing emotion over logic, romanticizing the situation, and even trying to justify her actions. It initially relies heavily on the “strong, independent woman” stereotype, portraying her as a victim of oppressive men who want to see her fail as a CEO, but this message is later contradicted and suggests that (some) women actually prefer it, being oppressed by their male colleagues.
This inconsistency not only bogs down the narrative, but also undermines the intended message. The film also shows a lot of the hypocrisy of the female CEO, perhaps with the aim of shedding light on the complexities of the female psyche.
However, the film remains overly romanticized, unrealistic, slow, and boring, making it difficult to hold attention. Ultimately, the film seems to appeal primarily to a female audience, which is probably reflective of its target audience.
