Follow a singer who suddenly dies on tour in Japan, but her spirit lives on as she embarks on a journey to find humanity in the afterlife. The Singapore premiere, which also marks the film’s Southeast Asian premiere, will be screened jointly at the 40th vOilah!
Spirit World is a multifaceted film that is at its core about two very human impulses. Right from the start of the film, we are introduced to three characters who have lost touch with both of their impulses, as defined.
Singer-songwriter Claire (Deneuve), Yuzo (Sakai) – a former composer, now a piano tuner – and their estranged son Hayato (Takenouchi), an anime director whose most acclaimed work seems to be behind him. For these three characters, decisions and actions taken in death and the afterlife are essential to finding solutions to life’s unresolved problems.
Putting aside the fear of the unknown and choosing to help the living, a selfless quest that leads, for our protagonists, to the fulfillment of their own humble desires. This is the life-affirming message of the Spirit World: that creative impulse can bear fruit in healing family bonds when applied with selfless intent.
The sympathetic performances draw you in, the beautiful landscapes of Takasaki and Chiba (and the seascapes) provide the perfect feast for the eyes, and it pays homage to the musical artists of the 60s and 70s, a golden age of creativity that may never be witnessed again. A sweet and heartfelt cinematic experience for anyone who has felt the pull of creativity and love for family.
