After months of isolation, Isherwood “Ish” Williams learns that much of the world has been affected by a mysterious disease. But despite Ish’s desire to remain isolated, he leads the creation of a new civilization based on the novel “The Earth Abides” by George R. Stewart..
It’s a great story with lots of striking imagery, highly recommended, although a bit dated – it was published in 1949, seventy-five years ago. While I’ve often wondered over the years if this would ever become a film, I wasn’t expecting this limited series adaptation, so I was very surprised when it came out. I was also very excited, as it remains one of my favorite works.
“People come and go, but the land remains” is a quote I often use. I watched the first episode with trepidation. That was really good!” The smoke from Emo’s house brought the book’s imagery to life.
Of course, it has been modernized in many ways out of necessity, but important aspects of the plot have remained virtually unchanged. The bite of the rattlesnake, the search for Lucky the dog (a princess in the book), the search for Milt and Anna. Other changes, such as limiting Isha’s travels to Las Vegas instead of Atlantic City, make sense and are not critical to the character interactions.
I’m really looking forward to the rest of this series. “Endless Peace!” One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of the biggest premieres on TV and streaming this month.
